On going projects

3.1 Olive project:

Title: The effect of Irrigation & fertilization on olive production of the       varieties Souri and Picholine.

Main objective: Amelioration of these varieties by reducing the alternancy.
Results: Low amount of water at critical dry periods increase production.

Duration: 4 years.

3.2: Jujube project:

Title: Intensive culture of 3 jujube varieties on trellis system.

Main Objective: Orientation of the fruit plant culture to the trellised system,

Pruning, organic fertilization, IPM techniques are used.

Results: High production yield with better fruit quality were from the trellised trees (high sugar content, big fruit size).

Duration: started at October 2001 and needs 4 years of production.

 3.3: Citrus:

Title: Study of biological & physiological properties of different species of citrus grafted on different rootstocks especially on Poncirus trifoliate.

Main Objective: Citrus grafted on Poncirus trifoliate rootstock can be cultivated in the mountains.

Duration: 4 years and above

 3.4: Carob project:

Title:  Intensive culture of local carob trees.

Main Objective:  Reducing the alternancy of the carob tree, by excessive pruning of the non-productive stems to enlarge the carob main stems.

Duration: 4 years and above

3.5: Tropical fruit project mainly Avocado:

Title: Culture of tropical and subtropical fruit plants at internal areas.

Main Objective: Determination of the Avocado varieties that can overcome the hoar-frost and the hard season conditions on altitudes (200-350m)

Duration: started on September 2001 and needs 4 years of production.

 3.6: Propagations by cuttings:

Title: The mass propagation of Ziziphus mela, Ziziphus pera, Passion fruit and Pomegranate.

Main Objective: Planting these varieties as borders for their low cost of production and high yield.

Duration: 4 years and above

Achievements

 4.1 Olive project:

Title: Clonal selection of local and foreign olive varieties.

Main objective: Determination of top quality trees as “mother trees” from each variety that conserve the best production results.

Duration: started on 1992 until now

Results: Cuttings are taken each year from the mother trees for propagation.

Laboratory: Water, soil and leaf analysis.

Quantity and Quality analysis of olive oil.

Major Constraints/Needs:        Laboratory staff needs.

                                                       High deficiency of yield workers.

                                                       High needs for labor materials.
